Sun-kissed Breakfast tells two stories. On its surface, this painting celebrates the bounty of East End farms and the joy of eating and entertaining alfresco in high season. The viewer anticipates that this farm to table spread has been prepared with love and will soon be enjoyed by a gathering of family or friends.

The second story this painting tells, is the one about East End light which is simply electrifying to paint en plein aire. Shapes, highlights and shadows, are painted decisively. The sun is moving. The painter must keep up. Gorgeous bouncing light and reflections of colorful fruit on favorite serving plates and pitchers is the essence of the work—intense enough to make the viewer squint.

About the Work

Maryann Lucas lives in Sag Harbor. She works in oils. Her paintings celebrate the East End’s bounty. Gardens, farmlands and beaches, along with farm stand bouquets and produce are her subjects—all of which she paints from life. Direct observation is both the agony and the ecstasy for Lucas. The joy is being with the actual subject and translating shape and light onto the canvas. The agony is the fight with time, fading light and wilting blooms. The tension of this closing window, however, is the very thing that Lucas believes keeps her work truthful, free and her soul fulfilled.
