On a rainy November afternoon, I went to the beach to look at the ocean, and found a churning, convulsing scene. Everything seemed to be moving at once. Dark clouds hung low in the sky, rolling toward me, while waves rose up and crashed down. The surf moved in and out and the current moved sideways, crashing into the jetty. I quickly made small drawings in my notebook, adding notes on color and light, and took some photos. Back in my studio, I painted several small panel paintings of that stormy day, which led to two large paintings.

The ocean and beach are constantly moving and shifting, and yet they remain a constant. What stays with me is the enormous force of the water and waves, the weight and a scale far beyond anything we could hope to control.
