I was driving west on the Montauk highway in Montauk, hoping to catch a glimpse of the sunset up on the hill lookout. I didn’t make it there but I discovered something else!, more exciting to me. As the sun had retreated the hills became simplified in darkness and the orang cast in the sky had turned the snow a bluish color. I was interested in distilling the moment into shapes and color sensation. Often when looking for one thing something else surprises!

About the Work

Phyllis Chillingworth translates profound moments into impactful paintings. Always looking, she gives the viewer a new window into how she sees. Her clarity of vision and unique color sense bring us fascination. She has had six solo shows at Atlantic Gallery, NYC. Phyllis has just returned from an artist residency in Southern Tuscany.

As a graduate of The Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago and with an MFA from Yale School of Art, experimentation continues to fuel her brushes. Phyllis states: “Each painting is a story, a ‘distillation’ of an astounding experience.” Phyllis lives in Manhattan and in Montauk where her studio is.
