I am a visual artist who lives full-time on the East End and maintains a studio practice here since 2007. My paintings can be described as non-narrative and abstract, done with oil on canvas or linen. I prefer this means of expression because it facilitates fluid, undetermined exploration of experiences, events, and the place where I live. Paintings can exceed seven feet and allow for immersive involvement to make and view. Both small and large works typically have spatial and structural complexity that invite the viewer to wonder in and through the painted surface and to assemble sympathetic and competing feelings and imagery. I prefer art that reflects the rich uncertainty of life.

I have degrees in art and architecture and am represented by a local art dealer. I return as a resident at the VCCA in March of 2026.

About the Work

Rob Calvert is a visual artist of thirty years with degrees in art and architecture and a Sag Harbor resident since 2006. His paintings are journeys and conversations rooted in memory and experience expressed without overt narrative. “I listen for rhythms that change my view of the world. I am a witness to resonance.”

His residencies include the Vermont Studio Center and the VCCA. His solo and group exhibitions occur in institutions and galleries on the East End, Maryland, D.C., Virginia, and North Carolina. He served as an art panelist for the NEA. Collections are mostly private.
